Meet Betty! Isn't she a beaut? Yes, this slug in a shell has made her way into our hearts and has become the emblem of Beachy Boheme! Now before you judge, let us explain.
Tracy's been known to scour local thrift stores for hidden treasures, and she's come back with some funky furniture, abandoned art... and most recently, this weird, quirky, ceramic snail. She apologetically presented it to me, expecting me to disapprove. No sirree. I instantly fell in love with this little slug, and before she knew it, we were naming it and rattling off how its symbolism captures what Beachy Boheme's mission is all about.
"Steady Betty" may move slow, but can't we all take a lesson from her way of life? I know I get caught up in the more-better-faster race of life, and Betty serves to remind us of our pace as we progress on our path of life. She's born without much of a shell and begins her life practically homeless. But, over time she builds her home and grows with it; it protects and shelters her and is an extension of who she is. The spiral pattern of her shell reflects her growth and reminds us of our expanding consciousness. But when a sea or land snail passes on, its shell often gets up-cycled and becomes home to others (like hermit crabs).
I know... a little existential from a silly little ceramic snail! But, that's the other side of Betty... she's silly and weird and bulbous...and reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously! She reminds us to add a little whimsy to our lives and find beauty in the ordinary.
