Hi Friends! A while back I posted a glimpse of our master bedroom with links on how to get the look. Well, now I want to show you the design process I use to put a room together.
Before we started offering design services at Beachy Boheme, I used good ol’ Microsoft PowerPoint to create a mood board using images I’d find online. This is what my original .ppt mood board looked like:
It takes a while to scour the web and find products that fit the exact dimensions, look, finish and most importantly the budget. I would write notes on the side to remind me where I found each item and if there were any items on sale. After we started offering design services to clients, we realized that we need a more efficient and professional way to display mood boards, costs and links to products for procurement and I came across a wonderful tool called MyDoma Studio. This paid software allows us to stay really organized, create a concept board that is realistic and within budget. Here’s what our mood board looks like on MyDoma:
While this mood board doesn’t include a layout of the room to scale, it does offer you a visual interpretation of what the room will look like once all the items are purchased. It also organizes all the information for each product including it's price, dimensions, URL links, etc. It even creates a client access view so it makes the procurement process much faster/easier.
What’s crazy is that now that I have Trade agreements with all these vendors, I actually could’ve saved about 20-25% on the cost of this room (that’s about $1,000)! That’s why I tell people that hiring an interior designer pays for itself in the savings alone! As a member of the design trade, Beachy Boheme receives anywhere from 10-30% discount from vendors like Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, West Elm, etc. So in the end, the amount a client pays us to design is essentially offset by the cost savings they receive by ordering through us. It almost makes no sense NOT to hire a designer, even if you’ve got a great eye for design. It always helps to have a fresh pair of eyes to help edit a concept into something refined, and with the cost savings, it’s a no brainer! I wish I would’ve known that myself, I would’ve definitely hired a pro to offer a second opinion and insight. Look at the cost savings on the furniture alone had I purchased items using a designer rather than on my own pre-Beachy Boheme!

The artwork above our bed was actually hand-painted by Tracy and the text is the lyrics from our wedding song “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison. To my husband’s credit, this was all his idea! He and I wanted our room to be a functional sanctuary and a place of love. As our family grows and our lives get even busier, this artwork reminds us of where we started, the vows we made and helps us stay connected.
You’ll notice a few items on the original mood board are missing from the actual room. A few of these items were replaced due to shipping and sizing errors. The original bench I ordered from OneKingsLane simply came in the wrong pattern/color and it was hideous! The original vanity from Pier1 Imports was too large once it arrived and took up too much space on my husband’s side of the room, so I needed to replace it with something more compact. At this point, I had also exceeded my original budget, so I opted to cut costs significantly on the bench and vanity and was able to find ones that fit my budget at Target! And such is the reality of sourcing! You almost need to expect that 20% of the items will not be quite right and is the nature of online shopping. I’ve learned to embrace return shipping and only order custom items in person from a reliable vendor because those are final sale and cannot be returned.
