Decor + After: Moody Office Makeover
This week's Decor + After gets personal... we're (finally) revealing the Beachy Bohème office! Yay!
Let me preface this by saying BB operates out of my home in Encinitas and this interior design project has been a long time coming because it's been a moving target. This room has served multiple purposes; music room, kids play room, mail/junk room, etc. (look at that horrifying before pic... eek!).
Now it's a kid-free work zone where I can hold client meetings, showcase some of our products/inventory and occasionally sew. The best part is this little makeover has literally transformed my business! You don't need me to point out the obvious relationship between a cluttered workspace and productivity. That's the point of good interior design. It's not just about creating pretty spaces... it's about functionality and creating flow. So where do you start? As per the yooj, I started by asking the question:
How do you want to use this space?
In my case, here's what I wanted (in order of priority):
- Place to store and showcase inventory/catalogs/fabric
- Meeting space for client presentations
- Sewing area
- Product photography zone
- Shipping/packaging space
I turn to social media for inspiration and start pinning
like crazy. This part turns in to an obsession... OCD kicks in, I neglect the kids, I start to smell bad and I forget to feed the dog (just kidding, I can't have a dog for this very reason). Once the mom-guilt kicks in, I stop pinning (or after a theme emerges, which ever comes first). Here's a sample of my decor inspo:

In this case, the recurring pattern was: dark walls, plants, statement rug, cheeky wall art.

: we chose to go with Green Smoke by Farrow & Ball
paired with black and gold accents for a moody vibe. This wall color is velvety and rich but not too dark, and the F&B Estate Emulsion applies flawlessly and has a matte chalky finish that lets the gold chairs and wood barn doors pop!
: sheepskin, leather and plants galore! Because this office gets plenty of natural light, we could have stopped at traditional floor plants, but we wanted something unexpected. So we opted for these vintage hanging stoneware planters
filled with air plants and hanging moss for added texture and whimsy. Leather office accessories and faux sheepskin seat cushions round out the textures, adding warmth and coziness to the space (and balancing out the feminine/masculine elements).
CHEEKY ART: although this room is technically the BB office, it's not lost on me that I work out of a house which is co-owned by my husband so, I couldn't entirely omit him from the design plan! Luckily, one of my favorite artists, Kolene Spicher, has a cheeky wall art collection called "vices" that I knew he would approve of. I chose the two paintings that most accurately capture our own guilty pleasures: wine & golf. The husband got a chuckle and appreciated the inclusive gesture. Double win!
You know how I love me some vintage rugs? Well I scored the perfect one via Instagram sold by Kentycky Rose Designs
and it's even better in person and compliments the wall color perfectly! I love it so much it inspired me to add vintage rugs
to our shop because these one-of-a-kind beauties add so much character to a space.
To compliment the rug's geometric pattern, these amazing gold chairs with faux sheepskin seat covers added a little feminine glam to the room, with geometric mid-century modern flair... and they are super comfortable!
Last but not least, that uh-mazing barn door. My brother-in-law
designed, made and installed them in a single weekend! He's incredible. And there's brass in between the ash wood for added layers of texture and drama! It's such a stunning focal point in the room, photos don't quite do it justice.
The only element that is missing in my office is a statement light fixture... these are the cuties I'm eyeing, what's your fave?
Here are some similar ones I'm considering... what do you think?
Along with all the aesthetic changes came all sorts of positive business transformations as well. Clarity, confidence, inspiration, even a greater sense calmness have come over the business as a byproduct of the room refresh. I am all about setting the right intention with clear goals, and I find that scented candles, essential oils and a diffuser help get me in the zone!
